What Is a Soft Structured Baby Carrier?
Soft structured carriers are a very popular choice for baby carriers. Resembling a backpack with a seat, these baby carriers can typically be worn in the front or back (or both) and are comparatively easy to put on and take off. Unlike wraps or ring slings, these carriers do not have a long learning curve. They are designed to distribute the child’s weight to the wearer’s hips while providing lumbar support and a snug, comfortable fit for both child and wearer.
Infants are carried with their legs tucked inside the carrier. As the child grows, the legs are repositioned through leg holes or the sides of the carrier. Carriers with buckle enclosures hold positions securely, so frequent adjustments are not typically necessary.
What to Look For
Here are a few things to consider when shopping for a soft structured carrier:
- Many carriers now support multiple carrying positions so the carrier can be used from infancy to the toddler years. Look for newer models that do not require a separate infant insert.
- Carriers with padded shoulder straps and waistbands are not only more comfortable but also provide more support when carrying an older (and heavier) child.
- Sleeping hoods as well as pockets and pouches are nice-to-have features that are usually found on the pricier models; other accessories, like rain covers, are typically sold separately.
- Carriers with wide or adjustable seats are better at distributing the child’s weight and better for hip health.
- These carriers are bulky and do not fit well or at all in diaper bags.
